THE INDUSTRIAL EXEMPTION: DO WE NEED IT

THE INDUSTRIAL EXEMPTION: DO WE NEED IT?

The repeal of Ontario’s Industrial Exemption has been scrapped by the provincial government. This in effect continues to allow some professional engineering work to be done on machinery or equipment by employees who don’t have a license to practice professional engineering.

The origin of the Industrial Exemption is contained in Section 12(3)(a) of the Professional Engineers Act. There has been considerable controversy over the removal of this clause from the Act, with valid arguments on both sides of the issue.

Your essay should open with an explanation of the Industrial Exemption and its implications, followed by a clear statement of your position, should the clause remain in the Act, or should it be removed?

The remainder of the essay should develop and explain your position.
