Funk and Disco

Funk and Disco

Introduction
Funk is a very unique style of music that uses polyrhythm’s, syncopated bass lines, accompanied with short vocal phrases, a repetitive pattern of the rhythm and phrases give rise to this style of music(Anonymous, n.d). While Disco is term used/derived after the Second World War from the word discotheque. It further developed as a result of music that was being played from recorded sources rather than the live band play.
Along with most rock music, funk style of music is primarily dominated by male lead performers, where as the disco style is quite the contrary i.e. is female dominated. But how do these styles each compare with other rock styles that re or are not also male dominated? Well:
Funk has a very distinct style that sets itself apart from the rock style. Its distinct feature is the polyrhythm’s, syncopated baselines with short vocal phrases which are repeated rhythmically, while rock music equally uses a bass guitar choruses that are equally short and repeated, accompanied by drums(Anonymous, n.d). Rock music as well has backup singers who help to bring out the essence of this style of music equally as the Funk which has back up musicians who help maintain the constant rhythmic accompaniment using polyrhythm such as the bass, drums, and horns (Anonymous, n.d) and(Inc, 2011).. This is evident with the James Brown’s band.
Both styles have the potential to influence a series of new musicians who had needed the independence to express the desire e.g. to produce music that would appeal to the public. This is evident as part of this styles involved, engaging the public in a mood to listen to or inform the public of social endeavor politics and basically advice, and even love experiences.
Are the male dominant styles ones that women would not care to perform or is there something inherently macho about them to the point that fans do not want to hear female performers? Well:
The male dominant styles and female dominant styles may have a culture behind their performances that have branded them (i.e. the styles) as gender biased. However this is not really true as female performers have the independence to perform in any genre of Music. The Disco was actually found as a perception /notion that the Funk style of music was male dominated and this gave rise of the Disco which was in a way a way to balance the two genres of music.
For the ones who doubt the gender element of leader ship in bands, the Soul Music who origin is from Philadelphia was female dominated .The style presented a common feature in music i.e. free will to express oneself. In which anyone who could sing could communicate freely to the listeners
Are there any characteristics about disco that give it particular appeal for women and homosexuals?
There are in fact some characteristics that set apart a distinct appeal for women and homosexual as far as Disco is concerned. Women and homosexual interestingly tend to associate music very much with their emotional part of life and how it relates to their daily activities.
The interrupted beat in the Disco style of music entices one to dance is particularly place under a ‘b.p.m’ (beats per minute) (Anonymous, n.d) .This makes it easy for ht disc jockey to segue music an allow tempo of music to be changed while dancing rhythmically.
The themes of sex, and love which is common feature in the conversational part /lyrics of songs of most disco music tend to encompass the interest of listeners.
Conclusion
Music is a means of communication and it allows different types of messages to be conveyed to the society. Funk and Disco very much did this and is still doing this, which means music can be sung by any gender as it has not limits. Equally music will continue to be an important part of man for many years to come.
