Compare three very different American pieces of music from your CDs: III #12 Ives: General William Booth Enters into Heaven; #16 Copland: Appalachian Spring; and #14 Anger: Street Stuff. Compare and discuss these pieces of music from the “American” perspective of sound. What makes them sound “American”? Can we get from them a definition of what sounds, melodies, rhythms are part of the nationalized classical music from the United States? What might that be?
